DESCRIPTION

The Trial of Bernhard Goetz is the original American Playhouse docu-drama based on the true life New York subway drama. Dubbed "The Subway Vigilante," Goetz, a white electrical engineer, shot and seriously wounded four black youths, his fellow passengers on a New York subway train-- after one of them asked him for five dollars. Goetz said he shot the young men in self-defense because he thought they were about to rob him. Prosecutors charged him with attempted murder.

The Trial of Bernard Goetz is a restaging of the trial and Goetz's New Hampshire confession, which was videotaped and later viewed by the jury. The people you will see are actors, but their words, including Goetz's confession, have been taken verbatim from more than 4,600 pages of trial transcripts.

The DVD is chaptered according to the natural flow of the trial . . . pre-trial, opening statements, etc.
