1959 - What an incredible rarity! Just when you thought you’d seen all the ‘50s sci-fi ever made, this forgotten b&w gem shows up. Destination Space is a terrific, slickly produced piece of space opera, originally intended as a one-hour TV pilot (it looks and plays like a feature). Towne and Agar are the commanders of a giant space station spinning through the heavens in orbit above Earth. As they prepare for a rocket launch from a nearby floating platform, a fiery meteor smashes into the station and cripples it! Towne is brought to task before a Senate subcommittee that questions the safety and wisdom of having such costly space projects. Later, when attempting another launch, it’s discovered that an overload within the rocket will result in a nuclear explosion—within minutes! Will the station be blown to smithereens? An intelligent, well-produced script helps a great veteran cast along. Special effects are quite good. Don’t bother looking this up in any movie book, you won’t find it! Wow. HIGHLY recommended. 16mm.
