What are "cookies?"

"Cookies" are small text files, frequently including anonymous unique identifiers, that are sent to your internet browser by a web site and are stored on your computer's hard drive.

Each web site can send its own cookie to your browser if you have set your preferences to accept cookies, but browsers only permit a web site to access the cookies it has already sent to you, NOT cookies sent to you by other web sites.  So, only the the information you provide or the choices you make while visiting the site can be stored in a cookie.  Allowing a web site to create a cookie does not give that site, or any other site, access to other information on your computer--only to the information in that particular cookie.

How can I tell my computer to accept or reject cookies?

Your browser can be configured  to accept all cookies, reject all cookies or notify you when a web site is requesting to set a cookie (this preference allows you to accept or reject each cookie on a case-by-case basis).   If you want to change your cookie preferences--or see what they are--check the "Help" menu of your internet browser for instructions.
